Music Applicants

Audition Required

Are you an aspiring music major or minor? We would be delighted to have you join our Department of Music! As part of the application process, you must audition before a faculty committee prior to your selected admissions application deadline.

On-campus auditions are held by appointment on select dates (see below), although you may request to schedule your audition on an alternative date in person or virtually if distance or scheduling conflicts limit your availability. Although an in-person audition is preferred, we do conduct live online auditions for those who cannot come to campus. Please contact us to schedule your in-person or online audition.

Upon completion of your audition, the Department of Music will notify the Office of Admissions of their recommendation for your acceptance into the music program, although the Office of Admissions makes the final decision on acceptance to the College.

No decision will be made on your application by the Office of Admissions if you have not completed your music audition. A personal interview with the Office of Admissions is encouraged by the Department of Music.

Deadlines to Apply & Audition

Your admissions application must be received by the Office of Admissions by November 1 for Early Decision I, by December 1 for Early Decision II, by January 20 for Regular Decision I, or by March 20 for Regular Decision II. You must complete your music audition by your selected admissions application deadline. If you are a Trustee Scholarship applicant, you must plan to audition prior to December 1 so that your audition can be considered alongside your Trustee Scholarship application.

How to apply

Scheduling Your Audition

To schedule your audition, please refer to available audition dates below and contact Mr. Mark Wasilko, music recruiting and technology coordinator, at WasilkoMB@gcc.edu or 724-264-4617.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time to warm up. You will be greeted at the Music Office located on the upper level of the Pew Fine Arts Center. Your parents are welcome to join you on campus, although they will be asked to step out during your audition. Current music majors will be available to answer your questions about their experiences as music majors at Grove City College. Additional information will be sent closer to your audition date.

Audition Requirements

In preparation for your audition, please see the below requirements and detailed instructions in our Music Audition Procedures brochure. Please also fill out the Personal Data Sheet and email it to WasilkoMB@gcc.edu, as we will need this information in order to schedule your audition.

MUSIC AUDITION PROCEDURES       PERSONAL DATA SHEET

There is not a prescribed music solo list for auditions. Musical selections of the standard academic repertoire for your instrument or voice are appropriate, and two or three selections of contrasting style are preferred. The faculty are looking for an appropriate level of competency and repertoire difficulty for the freshman level, above-average musicality, and potential for growth. Memorization is encouraged but not mandatory. The performance section of the audition will last approximately 10 minutes. Additional audition components (described below) will last approximately 20 minutes.

Piano/Organ
Piano/organ majors or minors should prepare two selections from the standard classical repertoire. The two selections should be from differing time periods (baroque, classic, romantic, modern). These may include various standard solo forms such as sonatas, etudes, character pieces, preludes, etc. Pianists should also prepare two to three major scales and their equivalent harmonic minor scales. All scales should be four-octaves ascending and descending. Contact Dr. Huebert, professor of music, for more information.

Voice
Voice majors or minors should prepare two selections from the standard classical repertoire (art songs, opera, oratorio). One selection must be in English and the second selection may be in English or a foreign language. A selection from musical theater may be included as a third selection. Piano accompaniment is available by request, or you may provide your own. Contact Dr. Mueller, assistant professor of music, for more information.

Musical Theater Minor
Musical theater minors should prepare two or three vocal selections from the musical theater standard repertoire. These pieces should be of contrasting style and mood and include something that is technical as well as lyrical. Piano accompaniment is available by request, or you may provide your own. Contact Dr. Piastro, music lesson instructor, for more information.

Brass/Woodwind/Percussion/Guitar
Brass/woodwind/percussion/guitar majors or minors may perform any of the standard solo literature for the particular instrument. Piano accompaniment is not required. Contact Dr. Erb, professor of music, for more information.

String
String majors may perform any of the standard solo literature for the particular instrument; however, Bach partitas, sonatas, or suites are encouraged as one of the selections. Piano accompaniment is not required. Contact Dr. Tedford, professor of music, for more information.

Additional Audition Components

Regardless of your instrument/voice, you will also be tested in tonal memory and rhythmic skills as part of your audition.

  • To assess your tonal memory, a faculty member will play a series of pitches on the piano and ask you to sing those pitches after one hearing.
  • To assess your rhythmic skills, a faculty member will ask you to tap rhythmic exercises at sight (no pitch).
