Grove City College's online 30-credit Master of Science in Education – Reading Specialist is an advanced study degree designed to take certified educators to the next level of practice by increasing their skill set and pedagogical knowledge. The program begins in the summer of 2025, with enrollment occurring on a rolling basis.
The curriculum includes courses in leadership, educational policy and law, reading specialist roles, responsibilities and resource, literacy assessment and intervention systems and models, remediation of reading and writing, and more. The program emphasizes preparing professionals for roles as reading specialists with an emphasis on the science of reading. In the reading specialist certification program, you will engage in specialized curriculum led by experts in literacy designed to prepare you to support students; literacy development, the science of reading and address reading challenges.

Reading specialists provide one-on-one interventions for individual students or small group instruction to students who struggle to read at their grade level. In many school districts, reading specialists also coach teachers on teaching methods, assessment, and curriculum changes. Reading specialists share responsibility with teachers in assessing students’ reading abilities, identifying deficiencies, and creating reading intervention plans and strategies. Reading specialists also find work in after-school programs, private educational institutions, clinical settings at hospitals and more.

The M.S. in Education – Reading Specialist program is designed to reflect professional guidelines as generated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), graduates will be eligible to sit for the Reading Specialist Certification Exam. It is designed for the working professional and will be delivered online in an asynchronous fashion.
