Men's volleyball set to begin inaugural season

The Grove City College Wolverine men’s volleyball team will play its inaugural match at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the Arena of the Physical Learning Center on campus.

Led by head coach Brett Heckathorn ’19, a veteran of Grove City’s accomplished National Collegiate Volleyball Federation club team, the men’s team will face Penn State Behrend in a non-conference matchup.

Men’s volleyball is the College’s 24th and newest NCAA Division 3 varsity sport. The addition of men’s volleyball brings gender parity to the College’s varsity sports offerings, with an equal number of men’s and women’s teams.

The 2025 season will also be the first year of men’s volleyball competition in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Grove City will compete against Bethany, Chatham, Geneva, Hiram, Saint Vincent and Thiel in the seven-team loop. The 12-match conference schedule begins Feb. 13 against visiting Saint Vincent.

The team’s season runs through April.

The Wolverines competed at the club level for the last three decades, helping form a strong foundation for the jump to the varsity level. Heckathorn, who has overseen the program’s transition from club to varsity competition since March 2023, will rely upon a blend of veterans and youth this spring. Three seniors – Quintin Norris, Cael McEwen, and Jim Shyu – and an equal number of juniors will be part of the rotation, along with seven sophomores and a trio of freshmen.
