Grove City College invests in campus improvements

Grove City College invested nearly $4 million in on-campus work over the summer of 2017, improving the College’s physical plant and providing a boost to the local economy.

A dozen large projects – replacing roofs, overhauling the College’s competition pool, paving projects and more – kept the College’s Operations Office, maintenance workers and area contractors busy on campus while students were away.

Some of the most extensive and visible work, once completed, are improvements to the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in the Physical Learning Center. The College replaced the pool’s HVAC system, installed new lighting, painted the pool and replaced balcony railings.

Also sure to be noticed by returning students are the refinished pews in Harbison Chapel. The woodwork in the 86-year-old chapel is one of its defining features and the work takes years off the well-used pews.

Other major projects included:

  • A new sidewalk along Campus Drive.
  • Replacing the running track and adding a javelin runway at Thorn Field.
  • Replacing the roof over the Ketler Auditorium stage in Pew Fine Arts Center.
  • Replacing the roof over the auditorium in Crawford Hall.
  • Replacing more than half of the roof of the Physical Learning Center.
  • Drainage improvements to soccer field and soccer practice field.
  • Improved fitness room and weight room lighting.
  • Painting laundry rooms in residence halls.
  • Plaster patching, painting and replacing curtains in Lincoln Hall.
  • Replacing the driveway and parking area at the Presidents House.

Those big projects cost the College about $3.75 million, according to Vice President for Operations James Lopresti.

Work done on campus helps fuel the local and state economy, according to a 2016 study by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania. The association estimated that Grove City College, its students and their families contributed nearly $140 million to the Keystone State’s economy annually and created hundreds of jobs.

Grove City College values stewardship and regular maintenance of the physical plant demonstrates the College’s commitment to keeping the campus beautiful and functional for current and future students.
