GCC engineering program among top 10

Grove City College’s engineering programs are among the best in the nation, according to Christian Universities Online, a leading college search website.

The College’s departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering collectively hold the number 7 spot on the online college guide’s “Top 10 Engineering Degree Programs 2017” list.

“This ranking acknowledges the continued excellence of our engineering programs. Our faculty are committed to working closely with the engineering majors to ensure their success upon graduation,” Dr. Stacy Birmingham, dean of the Hopeman School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics, said.

It’s not the first time Grove City College’s engineering programs have been noted for excellence. U.S. News and World report has long recognized their quality, listing Grove City College as one of its top 100 national undergraduate engineering schools for several years now. By enrollment, mechanical engineering is the most popular major at Grove City College.

The success of the engineering programs is due to excellent classroom instruction involving active learning and numerous opportunities for students to participate in research with faculty. Students participate in summer research opportunities at many prestigious institutions, including Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology and Vanderbilt University, as well as internships at leading companies and a semester in France program that gives students international exposure while keeping them on track to graduate in four years.

“The College’s Bachelor of Science programs are fully accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and students have the opportunity to participate in summer research projects as well as internships at companies and organizations including Motorola, NASA Lewis Research Center, General Electric Company, Alcoa, Johnson & Johnson and many others,” Christian Universities Online reported.

Grove City College boasts a 96-percent placement rate for all graduates, but anecdotal evidence puts that number north of 99 percent for engineering students. Students who chose to attend graduate school earn admission to and degrees from some of the nation’s leading universities, including Princeton, MIT, University of Virginia and Penn State.
