Faith-based Social Work Program’s accreditation renewed

Grove City College’s Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSW) program has been reaccredited after a thorough review by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The College’s program is the only faith-based social work program in western Pennsylvania. It is distinguished by real-world experience, exceptional faculty, the opportunity to earn advanced standing in graduate school, and a robust curriculum rooted in the belief that people are image-bearers of God with value and the potential to thrive.

“Grove City College integrates Christian values and ethical principles into its BSW program. This approach enriches the educational experience by encouraging students to view social work not only as a profession but as a vocation grounded in compassion, service, and justice,” Program Director Dr. Jennifer C. Hollenberger said. “This perspective fosters a holistic understanding of the individual and community, promoting a deep commitment to serving those in need and advocating for social change in alignment with Christian teachings.”

Accreditation ensures a program meets the high standards necessary for providing a quality social work curriculum and graduates are prepared to begin practice in the profession and signifies the program adheres to the rigorous academic and professional criteria set by CSWE. It also helps students qualify for advanced standing in master’s programs, reducing the time and expense of earning an advanced degree. Most states require CSWE accreditation for licensure.

“This is a significant milestone for Grove City College as it reflects our commitment to providing a high-quality, faith-based education that prepares our students to make a meaningful impact in their communities,” Hollenberger, an associate professor of Social Work, said. “Our graduates are equipped not only with the professional skills they need but also with a strong ethical foundation that guides their work in serving and advocating for others.”

The current BSW program received initial CSWE accreditation in 2020 and graduated its first class that same year.

The re-accreditation process involved a thorough review of the program’s self-study report, site visits by the CSWE accreditation team, and interviews with faculty, students, and administrators. The process is designed to ensure continuous improvement and adherence to the highest standards of social work education. The program’s accreditation runs until 2032.
