Computer Science students get with the program

Grove City College’s top computer programming team had a great showing in the regional competition of the annual International Collegiate Programming Contest.

The team from the College’s Department of Computer Science came in just behind squads from tech powerhouse Carnegie Mellon University at the competition Oct. 27 and 28 in Youngstown, Ohio. 

Student programmers from the College competed against 49 teams from 18 colleges and universities from the region. In the contest, teams are presented with programming problems and judged on how many they complete and how quickly they complete them.

The student programmers placed above 16 of the 18 institutions competing at the site and ranked among the best 20 percent across the region, which encompasses western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and eastern Ontario. They competed with 139 teams from 47 institutions in the regional round. The winning team advances to the world finals in Beijing.

“The students’ success at this prestigious competition speaks to their dedication, the quality of the education they receive and the problem-solving skills they developed,” Dr. Britton D. Wolfe , chair of the Department of Computer Science, said.
