The Collegian wins first place Student Keystone Press Awards

The Collegian, the student newspaper of Grove City College, won two first place 2019 Student Keystone Press Awards for work published in 2018.

Former managing editor Alyssa Jackson ’18 and the newspaper’s staff took first place in the General News category for their coverage of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in the Nov. 2 edition. Jackson graduated in December. She is currently an intern at World Magazine.

Contributing photographer Ivy Nowakowski ’20 took first place in the Feature Photo category for her photo “Spring plays in winter weather,” which was published in the March 16 edition. It depicted alumnus Luke Leone ’18 in character during a performance of the play “End of the World with Symposium to Follow.”

The awards from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association are an honor for the entire Collegian staff, which Collegian Editor-in-Chief James Sutherland ’20 said puts in long hours to put out a weekly newspaper “that makes Grove City College proud.”

“The Collegian brings together students from every discipline and background. It teaches teamwork and leadership skills, on top of the writing, editing, design, photography and reporting skills,” he noted.

“I am so glad that Alyssa, Ivy and our whole staff are being rewarded for that hard work. I cannot take much credit personally for these awards, because everyone at The Collegian is so good at their jobs that they leave me little to do. But as a friend and co-worker, I am so proud of what they all accomplished, and will continue to accomplish,” Sutherland said.

Newspaper Adviser Nick Hildebrand credited Sutherland, Managing Editor Grace Tarr ’20, Jackson and the rest of The Collegian’s editorial staff for their dedication to the newspaper and its mission to serve the College community and provide a training ground for the practice of ethical and excellent journalism.

“The talented and enthusiastic student journalists of The Collegian work diligently to create a great newspaper every week, and capturing two first place awards in Pennsylvania’s premier collegiate newspaper contest makes it very clear that hard work pays off,” Hildebrand said. “The College puts an enormous amount of faith in these students and they have demonstrated, once again, that they are deserving of that trust.”

The Collegian competed against dozens of other Pennsylvania scholastic newspapers in the contest’s division II, which includes colleges and universities that enroll fewer than 10,000 students.

The Collegian is student-run newspaper published weekly during the academic year by Grove City College. The Collegian nameplate dates back to 1891, when the College published a periodical journal reprinting lectures and speeches by College officials. The student newspaper bearing The Collegian name began weekly publication in 1914.
