The Grove City College athletic department will add men’s volleyball to its varsity sports offerings, starting in the 2024-25 academic year.
The program will be the 24th varsity sport at the College and begin play in January 2025. A national search for the program’s inaugural head coach is under way.
The Wolverines will compete in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, which will begin sponsorship of men’s volleyball in the 2024-25 academic year. The conference’s Presidents Council approved the addition of men’s volleyball to the league at its Thursday, Dec. 8, meeting.
“We are very excited to add men’s volleyball as a varsity sport,” Grove City College Athletic Director Todd Gibson ’00 said. “We look forward to competing against many of our traditional rivals in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and throughout the region.”
Grove City currently sponsors men’s volleyball at the club level, as the squad competes in Division II of the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation. The Grove City men’s club team concluded 2022 ranked No. 5 in the NCVF rankings.
In recent years, Grove City elevated its successful men’s and women’s club lacrosse programs to varsity status. The men’s lacrosse team began varsity play in 2018 and has won three straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles.
Grove City launched varsity women’s lacrosse in spring 2022. The Wolverines advanced to the 2022 conference tournament championship game while compiling a 14-4 overall record.
“Our lacrosse programs have demonstrated the blueprint on how to transition from a strong club program into highly competitive and successful varsity squads,” Gibson said. “We feel that by following a similar timeline with men’s volleyball, we will be able to establish a strong foundation for both short- and long-term success.”
The team will play its home matches in the Grove City College Arena, which currently serves as the home of Grove City’s women’s volleyball team, along with the men’s and women’s basketball programs.
