Grove City College honored recent graduate Cody Gustafson (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg) as its 2021-22 Sportsman of the Year and senior soccer standout Tirzah Lloyd (Durham, N.C./Homeschooled) as Sportswoman of the Year for the 2021-22 academic year at Sunday night's athletic department awards presentation in Pew Fine Arts Center.
The 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America of the Year in Division III football, Gustafson earned consensus All-America honors last fall. He also earned Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Player of the Year distinction.
Gustafson caught 97 passes for 1,420 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games during the 2021 season. He concluded his career as the NCAA's active leader with 5,305 career receiving yards and his 341 career receptions ranked second.
He owns Grove City's career records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches. Gustafson earned First Team All-PAC honors four times. Gustafson capped the 2019 season by earning MVP honors at the ECAC James Lynah Bowl as Grove City finished 9-2 overall.
Gustafson also competed for Grove City's track and field teams as a jumper and sprinter and capped his track career by earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors last spring. He is the first Grove City student-athlete to earn Academic All-America in multiple award programs.
In 2021, Gustafson scored in three events at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He earned conference runner-up in the triple jump with a best mark of 42 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Gustafson also placed third in the long jump (21-4 3/4) and helped the 400-meter relay take fourth with a time of 44.70 seconds.
Gustafson graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He earned Dean's List and PAC Academic Honor Roll recognition during his career.
Lloyd started in each of her final three seasons at center back for the Grove City women's soccer team. Lloyd led a Grove City defense that posted a 1.10 goals-against average this year, along with three shutouts. Offensively, she finished second on the team with five goals and 12 points.
Lloyd earned First Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference, along with United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors in fall 2021. She also earned First Team All-PAC honors in spring 2021 after achieving Second Team All-PAC as a sophomore in 2019. Lloyd merited United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region in the spring 2021 season and again last fall.
CoSIDA also honored Lloyd as an Academic All-American in November 2021.
This spring, Lloyd joined the Grove City women's lacrosse team for its inaugural season. She has started 10 games for the Wolverines, who are 13-3 overall and went 7-1 in the conference.
She has been named to the Dean's List and the conference's Academic Honor Roll. Lloyd has also been inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board honoraries.
Grove City first awarded its Sportsperson of the Year award in 1948. In 1982, the College split the award into Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
