Acclaimed economist to discuss ‘Adam Smith meets C.S. Lewis’

Elzinga

Dr. Kenneth Elzinga, an acclaimed economics professor, author, and Christian scholar, will discuss “Adam Smith meets C.S. Lewis” at 6:30 p.m. April 8 in Sticht Lecture Hall in the Staley Hall of Arts and Letters at Grove City College.

The lecture, sponsored by the College’s School of Business and The Center for Rural Ministry at Grove City College, is free and open to the public.

Elzinga, who serves as the Robert C. Taylor Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia, is an anti-trust expert who also writes mystery novels in which the protagonist employs economic analysis to solve the crime. He is a popular and respected educator at UVA, where his introductory economics course attracts over 1,000 students and his antitrust Policy seminar, which is taught using the Socratic method, often has a waiting list of two years. He helped found one of the first university-based Christian study centers in the United States more than 50 years ago.

“Ken Elzinga is a powerful example of what it means to ‘think Christianly.’ He is a respected scholar, a highly sought-after teacher, a pioneer in campus ministry, a friend and mentor to many, and a devoted disciple of Jesus,” according to Dr. Charles Cotherman ’06, executive director of the Center for Rural Ministry.

Elzinga has invested – personally and professionally – in a number of ministry efforts, from serving as a longtime trustee of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to supporting the Center for Rural Ministry. “Ken and his wife Terry have also been key partners in our efforts to sustain the work of the Center for Rural Ministry at Grove City College,” Cotherman said.

The Center for Rural Ministry at Grove City College is an initiative to bolster the partnership of College, Church, and Community. The Center provides a regional hub for pastors, students, faculty, and lay leaders by fostering meaningful partnerships that promote kingdom flourishing in the churches and communities of our region and beyond.

Grove City College’s School of Business offers degrees in Accounting and Finance, Management and Marketing, Economics, and Entrepreneurship. Its ACBSP-accredited programs, highly accomplished faculty mentors, interdisciplinary freedom, and diverse internship opportunities, equip students for professional success and ethical leadership.
