What To Bring

Below are a few checklists to help you prepare for your move. Some items we strongly recommend that you bring while others are preferential. To protect the health and safety of everyone living in or visiting the residence halls, we cannot permit some items in the buildings. Please pay special attention to the Fire & Safety protocol at the bottom of this page.

Items You Should Bring
  • Alarm clock
  • Bedding (mattress pad, sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blanket)
  • Caddy to carry shower items
  • Desk lamp and supplies
  • Hand soap
  • Hangers
  • High-efficiency laundry detergent
  • Laundry basket or bag
  • Microwave (900 watts or less)
  • Power strip with a surge protector (minimum 14 gauge wire)
  • Refrigerator (4.5 cubic feet or smaller)
  • Sewing kit and first aid kit
  • Swimsuit
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Umbrella
  • Wastebasket

  • Bicycle and lock
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Decorative throw rug
  • DVDs, CDs, board games, etc.
  • Fan
  • Flashlight
  • Headphones
  • Inexpensive camera
  • Radio, TV, DVD player, CD player, iPod, Roku
  • Snack food and beverages
  • Sports and recreation equipment
Items to NOT Bring
  • Alcohol
  • Alcohol or drug paraphernalia
  • Camping stoves
  • Candles
  • Combustible liquids
  • Curtains or drapery
  • Electric open-coil heaters or any appliance with exposed burners
  • Electrical outlet expanders without a reset button
  • Extension cords less than 14-gauge (gauge number MUST be at least 14)
  • Extension cords without a surge protector
  • Firearms of any kind and all others items classified as weapons
  • Fireworks, explosives, etc.
  • Halogen lights/bulbs and lamps and the five-arm lamps with plastic lamp shades
  • Helium tanks
  • Illegal drugs
  • Incense and incense burners
  • Knives with blades exceeding four inches
  • Lamps that have three or more lights with plastic shades
  • Live Christmas trees
  • Lofts
  • Obscene or pornographic material
  • Open-coil appliances such as toasters, space heaters, or air conditioning units
  • Ovens, stoves, charcoal grills, hot plates, and immersion coils for heating water
  • Pets (small, non-carnivorous fish are the only "pets" permitted)
  • Power tools
  • Road signs, road cones, or other public property without proof of purchase
  • Satellite dishes
  • Surveillance cameras
  • Waterbeds
  • Weapons of any sort
  • Wireless routers
  • Any other items contrary to The Crimson: Student Handbook
Fire & Safety Protocol

Take note of the following fire and safety protocols. Misuse of any of these protocols constitutes a violation of fire and safety guidelines and will not be permitted.

  • Appliances with a hot plate, open flame, or exposed heating surface (such as coffee pots, mug warmers, candle warmers, etc.) are not permitted. Coffeemakers such as Keurig machines are permitted.
  • Be sure to reference the Items to NOT Bring list above as many of these items are fire and safety concerns.
  • Bed risers or lofts that are homemade are not permitted. Bed risers must be no more than 6” high and made of high density polyethylene that holds at least 1,200 lbs. Only college provided loft kits may be used and are only available in certain halls.
  • Chords cannot be strung across the floor.
  • Christmas lights cannot be covered by cloth or paper, and only 2 Christmas light strands are permitted to be strung together.
  • Damaged or frayed cords cannot be used. Taping cords is not an acceptable fix.
  • Extension cords are only permitted if they have a surge protector and are at least 14 gauge.
  • Nothing can be hung from the ceiling.
  • Lights cannot be covered by cloth, paper, or other cover.
