Dayl Jewell granted honorary degree

Dayl Jewell, wife of Grove City College President Richard G. Jewell ’67, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Saturday, May 17, at the Commencement ceremony in the Physical Learning Center on campus.
The College also granted honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who delivered the Commencement Address, speaking on “America’s Promise in Uncertain Times,” and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to Dr. Ron Moore, senior pastor of The Bible Chapel who addressed graduates at the Baccalaureate service on Friday night.

David Rathburn ’79, chair of the Board of Trustees awarded Mrs. Jewell the honorary degree. “As a leader in the banking industry and president of the 20th Century Club, the historic Pittsburgh Women’s Club, you brought honor to your alma mater Geneva College,” Rathburn said. “As the First Lady, you have ably and honorably served Grove City College; your leadership, devotion and service have impacted and inspired all of us—students, faculty, administration and trustees alike. For your unflagging commitment and for truly embodying the spirit of Grove City College, we are proud to recognize you.”

Mrs. Jewell spends a lot of her time on College business with President Jewell, including trips to see donors and alumni and entertaining guests that often stay at the Jewells’ home.

Mrs. Jewell met President Jewell while she was attending Geneva College and he was at Grove City College. “Dick came to visit his twin brother, and I just happened to be standing there. We were introduced, and the rest is history,” Mrs. Jewell told the Grove City College student newspaper The Collegian. “Our second date was to Grove City’s Homecoming.”

After President Jewell finished pursuing his law degree at the University of Michigan, the couple returned to Pittsburgh where Mrs. Jewell worked for PNC Bank. There, she rose through the ranks to become vice president and district manager in Pittsburgh.

The Jewells have one daughter, Jessica, who is married to Paul Lalley, and two granddaughters, Felicity and Reagan.
