Student Frequently Asked Questions

When are Career Services appointments offered and how do I schedule one?
We offer 45-minute appointments Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m., 2:00, 2:45 and 3:30 p.m., generally.  Please note: you may have to wait one to two weeks to meet with a counselor given the busy schedule of the office.  To schedule an appointment with any of our Career Services staff members, you can stop by the office during our open hours, email us at career@gcc.edu or call us at 724-458-3371.  When emailing us, please let us know your general availability based on our appointment offerings.

What can I do to prepare for an appointment?
It is helpful to consider in advance what you would like to accomplish during the appointment taking into consideration the time allotted. For resume review appointments, come prepared with two copies of your resume (one for you to take notes on and one for the career counselor). You may just want to set up an initial appointment first to get an overview of what the CSO offers and determine what a good course of action might be for the academic year.

What if I can't make my scheduled appointment with the career counselor?
Please contact our office (724-458-3371 or career@gcc.edu) in advance if you are unable to make it to your appointment.

When is the CSO open during the school year?
Our office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.-noon and 1:00-5:00 p.m.

When should I begin visiting the CSO?
It's never too early to visit the CSO!  We work with ALL students, no matter what major, year and geographic location!  We recommend that you engage with our office as early in your college career as possible and that you take advantage of the four-year process we have laid out for our students.

What are Resume Blitz days and Wednesday Walk-Ins?
On these days, CSO staff members take 15-minute walk-in appointments to meet with students. On Resume Blitz days, stop by from 10:00 a.m.-noon or 2:00-4:00 p.m. to have your resume quickly reviewed by one of the CSO staff members. For a Wednesday Walk-In, drop in from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for a first-come, first-served appointment!

What is On-Campus Recruiting?
The CSO hosts employers who choose to interview students right here in our office for various job and internship opportunities. Upcoming on-campus interview schedules can be viewed and applied to through JobGrove.

Where do the on-campus interviews take place and how should I prepare?
On-campus interviews take place in the CSO (located in the PLC; main entrance directly across from Hoyt) in one of our four interview rooms. If you have a telephone interview with an organization, you can also use one of these interview rooms if available; please contact Linda Reash (724-458-3371 or career@gcc.edu) to check on availability of the room.  We recommend that you view the Interviewing section of our site for advice on job interviews, as well as phone/virtual interviews.  Additionally, we recommend that you arrive 15-minutes early for your scheduled interview and dressed in professional attire (pant/skirt suit).  To participate in our On-Campus Recruiting (Interviewing) Program, you must first review our program’s Policies & Procedures in advance.

Where do I find internship and/or job postings?
Visit JobGrove to view job and internship opportunities posted through our office, as well as on-campus interview schedules.  We also recommend that you view our Online Job & Internship Sites section for additional resources to help you identify opportunities.

When applying for a job or internship, why does JobGrove say that I do not qualify?
Employers are able to specify qualifiers in their posting information. If you receive the message that you do not qualify for a position, then there is likely something in your profile (major, classification, QPA, etc.) that does not agree with the requirements.

When should I start applying for jobs or internships?
Job and internship opportunities are posted throughout the year and have varying deadlines. Thus, we encourage you to begin the search process early in the academic year for these positions.

If I'm planning to attend graduate school, should I still utilize the CSO?
Yes, the CSO has many resources available not just for job and internship seekers, but also those pursuing graduate school. Stop by our office to pick up the latest edition of our Graduate School Guide, a comprehensive guide to doctoral, master's and professional degree programs, and to view our U.S. News & World Report Graduate School Rankings magazine and reference books for the various graduate admissions exams (GREs, LSATs, MCATs, etc.). Additionally, check out our Graduate School section for further resources and information (i.e., online sites for researching programs, Graduate School Timeline, Guidelines for Writing Your Personal Statement, and more!).  The CSO provides students with general information and advice on the graduate school process.  We recommend that students meet with their academic advisors for discipline-specific counsel.

What is the difference between Career Services and Education Career Services?
Education Career Services (ECS) functions as a satellite office of the CSO. Mrs. Deborah Snyder serves as the Associate Director of ECS and is excited to meet with Education majors, as well as those students considering Education as a major. ECS is located in the HAL 100 - the Education Suite. Education majors are also welcome to visit the CSO for access to additional resources.

Where do I go for assistance regarding obtaining credit for an internship?
While the CSO can be of assistance regarding the internship search, if you would like to receive academic credit for an internship, you will need to speak with your academic department’s Internship Coordinator. Visit the College's Internships website for more information.

How can I obtain a copy of my transcript?
A copy of your unofficial transcript can be obtained through myGCC. To request an official transcript, this is done through the Registrar's Office.
