Charles E. Kriley

What is your educational background?

  • B.S. Chemistry, Grove City College 1988
  • Ph.D. Inorganic/Organometallic Chemistry, Purdue University

What are the main focuses of your research?

  • Preparation of novel Inorganic transition metal complexes, specifically with tungsten aryloxide-pyridine complexes and nickel phosphine complexes.
  • Preparation of quercetin and resveratrol derivatives for the study of their activity as anti-cancer drugs, specifically testing on an in-house mouse cancer cell line.
  • A long term study of the effects of Marcellus fracking on the natural water supply of Butler, Pa.

What specific courses or specialties do you teach?

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Descriptive Inorganic/Bioinorganic Chemistry
  • Chemistry 101 lab
  • General Chemistry Lecture/Lab
  • Crystal Structure Analysis
  • Non-majors Chemistry
  • Research

I have been interested in transition metal chemistry since the summer following my junior year of college. I was selected for a summer research internship at Purdue University under the direction of Dr. Ian Rothwell. My research project gave me the opportunity to learn specialized techniques necessary to manipulate chemicals in a moisture and oxygen free environment. I also had the opportunity to take classes through the American Chemical Society and the American Crystallographic Association specializing in x-ray crystallography. The chemistry department at Grove City College, through a generous alumni donation, purchased a bench top diffractometer which is utilized for the Crystal Structure Analysis class and research.

In your opinion, what is the most important piece of advice you give your students to help them succeed?

The most important piece of advice that I give students is to major in something that you enjoy. Over the years, I have had students ask me in class what they should do to get into medical school and I always have the same answer, pick a major that you would like to work in if you change your mind about entering a health career.
