College, town partner to make Homecoming extra special

Grove City College’s Homecoming 2017 is just around the corner and the College and the town are teaming up to make this year’s edition of the annual alumni and family weekend extra special.

Campus will be ground zero for Homecoming festivities Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 8, with a packed schedule of events that showcase Grove City College’s appreciation for its alumni, current students and families.

The celebration formally kicks off Friday, but the public will really notice at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 when the homecoming parade starts to make its way to Olde Town. The parade begins on campus and follows a path west up East Pine Street and south on Broad Street to Carnegie Alumni Center.

This year’s parade theme of iconic movies will be expressed in a series of floats by Grove City College student groups and organizations. Groups of alumni from years ending in 7 or 2 will also march, along with returning homecoming royalty, the Wolverine Marching Band and bandfront and musical outfits from area high schools.

Homecoming activities then shift to Thorn Field for a pre-game show at 1:15 p.m. before the Wolverine football squad takes on the Saints of Thomas More College in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. The College’s Homecoming Queen and King will be announced at halftime.

The events on campus Saturday will follow the awarding Friday evening of Grove City College Alumni Association’s coveted Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Awards. This year’s honors go to: Dr. Alejandro A. Chafuen ’84; Dr. Richard G. Jewell ’67; Dr. Angelo J. Mariotti ’78; Capt. Ronald W. Yeaw ’65, U.S. Navy retired. Honorees have made significant contributions to their fields of endeavor and society.

In collaboration with the College, Olde Town Grove City is holding the inaugural GroveFest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, featuring a slew of value-added activities, live performances and special offers courtesy of Broad Street merchants, area businesses and other pillars of the community.
