Austrian Student Scholars Conference

Open to undergraduate and graduate students in any academic discipline, the annual Austrian Student Scholars Conference (ASSC), hosted by Grove City College, brings together students from colleges and universities across the country and around the world to present their own research papers written in the tradition of the great Austrian School intellectuals such as Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Murray Rothbard, and Hans Sennholz.

Present Your Research

During the conference, keynote lectures are delivered by outstanding scholars in the Austrian economic tradition such as:
  • Dr. Lucas Engelhardt, Assistant Professor of Economics, Kent State University at Stark
  • Dr. Peter Klein, Professor of Entrepreneurship, Baylor University
  • Dr. Guido Hülsmann, Professor of Economics, University of Angers
  • Dr. Philipp Bagus, Professor of Economics, Rey Juan Carlos University

Accepted papers are presented in a regular conference format to an audience of students and faculty; and cash prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500 are awarded to the top three papers, respectively, as judged by a select panel of Grove City College faculty. Hotel accommodations are provided to all students who travel to the ASSC to present, and limited stipends are available for travel expenses.

Students should submit presentation proposals to the director of the conference by January 15. In order to be eligible for cash prizes, finished papers must be submitted to the director by February 1.

Conference Details

History

In 1956, J. Howard Pew, chair of the Board of Trustees, hired Hans Sennholz – the young protégé of the dean of Austrian economists Ludwig von Mises – to head the Department of Economics at Grove City College. Under his direction, Grove City College became the world’s leading undergraduate institution for the study of Austrian economics.

At commencement in 1957, Grove City College awarded an honorary doctorate degree to von Mises, and in 1978, five years after von Mises passed away, his widow Margit von Mises was asked by their friend, Hans Sennholz, to secure a permanent home for the von Mises papers at Grove City College. Since 1978, the 20,000-page von Mises Archive at Grove City College has been a source of valuable scholarship including four books of von Mises' previously unpublished manuscripts.
